Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief Projects

Implemented by Social Service Department of JI Sri Lanka & Human Care Foundation, Sri Lanka

Performance Report----For the month of February 2005

1. Ambulance Project
Project Description:
A brand new ambulance with nursing facilities was handed over to Social Service Department of JI Sri Lanka to be used in tsunami affected areas
Need Analysis:
Kinniya in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka is a badly affected area by the tsunami. Kinniya lost many lives, wealth and basic infrastructure. The state district hospital of Kinniya was totally destroyed. As replacement Italian government established a makeshift hospital and Helping Hand established a medical clinic. However these two medical institutions were not enough to cover the medical needs of the area and emergency cases had to be transferred to Trincomalee and Kanthale base hospitals. For this an ambulance was required

Beneficiaries: More than 15, 000 Tsunami Victims and around 70,000 others living in the area benefit from this project. During emergencies this ambulance can be utilized in other areas as well.

Date of Launching: 25th of February 2005

Capital Cost:

Total cost of the ambulance $ 39,493.21

2. Sewing Training School- Hambantota

Project Description: This training Center has 10 Juki sewing machines, accessories and training tools. It operates in a rented building. It conducts 3-month full time courses.

Need Analysis: Hambantota, 240km from Colombo in the deep south of Sri Lanka, is one of the most affected areas in the country due to the Tsunami tidal waves. Hambantota town has a population of around 17,000 and majority of them are form the Muslim community. The tidal waves have erased the entire town to ground destroying hundreds of shops, 1100 houses. The death toll is believed to be around 3000. About 1000 families live in Camps. They have no livelihood to lead a normal life. It is strongly believed that a skill development program will help people to start earning for their families and will be a relief from post Tsunami mental trauma.

Beneficiaries: This project will benefit 240 Tsunami victim females in one year. Thirty students are enrolled for each batch. Two courses are conducted concurrently. Hence total number of batches in one year will be 8.

Cost of the Projects:

Total capital cost of the project $ 3,946.67

3. Health Center – Kinniya

Project Description: Helping Hand’s health center, named “The Helping Hand Health Center” has been started with an OPD unit in a rented building.

Need Analysis: Kinniya is located in the Eastern province of Sri Lanka with a population of around 75,000. The state district hospital of Kinniya was destroyed and unable to continue its activities. As replacement Italian government established a makeshift hospital. However it was not enough to fulfill the requirements. In view of this situation Helping Hand Health Center was inaugurated on 28th of February 2005

Beneficiaries: This project provides important healthcare products and services to an area with a population of 75,000. It serves around 250-300 patients/day. It provides immediate essential medical treatments to both Tsunami victims and others who have lost their only state hospital due to Tsunami.

4. Pre-school – Kalmunai

Project Description: A nursery school, named “The Helping Hand Pre-School” was sponsored & started by Helping Hand in a rented house with learning tools and furniture for 80 children and 3 nursery teachers.

Need Analysis: Kalmunai is a densely populated municipality in the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka, around 350Km away from the capital city Colombo. The population of Kalmunai Municipal area is around 100,000. Many pre schools in this area have been destroyed by the tsunami tidal waves directly affecting the education of more than 300 children

Beneficiaries: The project will provide nursery education facilities for 80 Students at a time and employment for 2 - 3 teachers in the Tsunami affected area.
Cost of the Project: Total cost of the Project $ 4,664.98

· In the first year this nursery will serve free of charge

· From the beginning of the second year it will run on a self sufficient basis

5. Self Employment Projects

Several Self-employment projects were launched by Helping Hand in the following Tsunami affected areas

Ampara District – Kalmunai, Maruthamunai, Sainthamaruthu, Pottuvil and Nintavur

· Batticloa District - Kattankudy

· Trincomalee District- Kinniya

5.1 Ampara District

Project Description:

In order create employment opportunities, source of income and bring the Tsunami victims to normalcy following self-employment projects were launched on 27th of February 2005.

Beneficiaries: This will provide start up support for 85 Tsunami victim families.

Cost of the Project: Total cost of the self-employment project implemented in Ampara districts was $6,896.74

5.2 Trincomalee District – Kinniya

Self employment projects in Kinniya

20 Bicycles with scales and 15 sewing machines were distributed in Kinniya

Beneficiaries:

Around 35 tsunami victim families

Cost of the Project:

Total cost for self-employment projects in Kinniya was $ 2,427.91

5.3 Baticaloa Districts – Kattankudy

Self employment projects in Kattankudy

20 bicycle with weighing scales and 15 sewing machines were distributed among 35 families of Kattankudy

Beneficiaries:

35 families will be directly benefited by this project.

Cost of the Project: Total cost of the project is $ 2,427.91
