Ethiopia is the world's 27th-largest country (after Colombia). It is comparable in size to Bolivia, and is about two-thirds as large as the US state of Alaska.
The major portion of Ethiopia lies on the Horn of Africa, which is the eastern-most part of the African landmass. Bordering Ethiopia is Sudan to the west, Djibouti and Eritrea to the north, Somalia to the east, and Kenya to the south.
Ethiopia's poverty-stricken economy is based on agriculture, accounting for almost half of GDP, 60% of exports, and 80% of total employment. The agricultural sector suffers from frequent drought and poor cultivation practices.
According to the 2007 CIA World fact book Ethiopia has a high infant mortality rate with 91.5 deaths/1000 live births. There is a high of risk in infectious diseases present related to food and waterborne diseases. This is where Helping Hand is working to help the people of Ethiopia with its Water and Sanitation project. |
