SITUATION REPORT- EASTERN REGION
The situation is becoming more and more unmanageable in the entire Eastern region especially from Akkaraipattu to Oddamavady.
MARUTHAMUNAI
Hundreds of houses were totally destroyed; more than 300 houses were partially damaged. There are five camps operating in this area. The details of these camps are as follows: Al Manaar School- 1500 persons/400 families; Al Minan Vidyalaya- 900 persons/ 368 families; Central Mosque- 1500 persons/ 250 families; Al-Hamra School- 400 persons/100 families.
SAINTHAMARUTHU –MAALIHIKADU AREA
There are four refugee camps operating in this area. The total death toll in this area in thousands including approximately 1500 Muslims However, another 1200 persons is reported as missing.
KALMUNA
Three refugee camps operating in this area. The details of these camps are as follows: Balika Vidyalaya- 400 families; Manbabul Hidaya Madrasa- 212 families; Al- Azhar School- 300 families.
VALAICHANA
Around 200 Tamil families are staying in the camp set up at the Vandharumoolai campus. Refugees to vacate this place.
Flood
Flood level in the Eastern region is becoming more and more critical. Heavy shower continues and predicted for next couple of days. Refugee camps are submerging. People as well as relief teams are in a desperate situation.
Ladies Medical Team
7 member ladies medical team was fully busy in treating to the Tsunami victims in the South Eastern region of Sri Lanka. For the last two days this team treated hundreds of women, children and elders who are unable to recover from the trauma.
Medical Team in Southern part of Sri Lanka
Another team of doctors comprising engaged in medical treatment to the Tsunami victims in the Southern part of Sri Lanka. Several medical camps were held in temples, mosques and schools. Alhamdo lillah all these camps were very successful. People are expecting more ladies medical teams.
Helping Hand is implementing its relief projects in Sri Lanka through local NGO’s; Social Services Department of JI & Human Care Foundation. Above reports are from field offices

Sri Lanka Relief update December 30, 2004
Our field office in Sri Lanka has asked for donations for the following items:
1. Three passenger vans for relief operations
2. To send five lady doctors and supporting staff to the South East region
3. For the coordination team working under the leadership of Dr. M.C.M based in Kalmunai
4.For the coordination team working under the leadership of As-Sheikh Abdul Wajid Islahi in the Battocaloa district
5. Urgently need of backhoes to facilitate burials of newly recovered bodies immediately and for continuous releif work in the future. Renting costs are Rs. 1500.00per hour plus transportation costs. New backhoe costs about Rs. 2.5 Million (US$. 25000.00) or used one can cost half this amount.
