Helping Hand sponsored two camps in and around the earthquake affected areas at the emergency phase. We were able to provide immediate relief to 3,050 people through these two camps. The project was launched immediately following the earthquake for the families which were directly affected, who were rushed towards the nearest cities. A camp was managed in H-11 Islamabad with the collaboration of Muslim Aid an Islamabad based NGO and another camp was managed by HH with the collaboration of Micro soft USA. We were able to manage and support the daily requirements of around 3050 persons for 5 months. These internally displaced persons fled their houses to reach a safe place during the extreme winter conditions.
The project was initiated to meet the requirements of the construction material in Bagh District, one of the most EQ hit districts. The need of the project was felt when the price of the cement block was raised to Rs. 34 instead of Rs. 18, making it almost impossible for the affected population to reconstruct their homes. So Helping Hand initiated this project. The project was completed and started production since December 2006. The per day average block making capacity in a good sunny day is 2000. The project also produces crush, pine and Khaka as by product of the plant. Helping Hand provides subsidies on building material and also use earned amount for further relief projects in that area.
Keeping all the importance of drinking water Helping Hand is continuously sponsoring projects for providing clean water / hand pumps. Helping Hand has installed hundreds of Hand pumps in Pakistan providing hundreds of communities with safe clean drinking water. Helping Hand Pakistan provided clean drinking water to victims of 8th October 2005 earthquake for daily life consumption to local resident and reduces precious water wastage. Helping Hand reconstructed the infrastructure of water supply of the area to reduce women efforts for fetching and collecting water and to increase capacity of women in the economic activities.
The objective is to help earthquake affected widows and less advantaged women establish their life and become self-sufficient. For this purpose HH USA established eight Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) in earthquake areas. Over 400 women are enrolled in these centers. Now most of trained women are earning bread and butter for their families.
