The Republic of Niger is going through its worst humanitarian crisis. More than three million people (25% of its population) are currently suffering from famine. An estimated 20% of its children are suffering from severe malnutrition while hundreds have already starved to death.
The current famine was predicted as early as last year, when drought and locust plagues decimated food supplies. Starting in November 2004, both the Government of Niger and the United Nations has repeatedly asked for international aid. The first UN appeal got no response. The second, in March 2005, received $1 million out of a needed $16 million. The third, on May 25th, received only $10 million out of a needed $30 million.
It has been reported that it is simply too late for too many. With the rainy season, malaria and other diseases will endanger even more people and aid workers predict that the situation will worsen over the next few weeks.
