The state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir lies between longitude 73o – 75o and latitude 33o – 36o and comprises an area of 5134 square miles (13,297 square kilometers). The topography of the area is mainly hilly and mountainous with valleys and stretches of plains. The area is full of natural beauty with thick forest, fast flowing rivers and winding streams. Main rivers are Jehlum, Neelum and Poonch. The climate is sub-tropical highland type with an average yearly rainfall of 1300 mm. The elevation ranges from 360 meters in the south to 6325 meters in the north.

Human rights violations in Indian held Kashmir have sent a tidal wave of refugees into Azad Kashmir. Thousands of families have become homeless. The impact of mass killing of men, the bread-earners, has crumbled the socio-economic structure. Result? Thousands of refugees, mostly widows and orphans trapped in misery and poverty.

Helping Hand has focused all its efforts towards programs that meet the current needs, and also provide opportunities for better health, education, and economic progress on a continued basis.

Healthcare Program
Helping Hand started its medical help through Kashmir Surgical Hospital. This hospital is a fully equipped hospital which provides medicines and surgical services. It has in-patient facilities, 4 ambulances, 1 operation theater and 60 branch centers in refugee camps. There are 5 Primary Health Centers in refugee camps, equipped with X-Ray, ECG, Labor Room, pharmacy, and treat an average of 1,000 patients every month.

Orphan Sponsorship Program
Islam enjoins Muslims to care for children without parents: "...and spends his substance - however much he himself may cherish it - upon his near of kin, and the orphans..." (Al-Qur'an, 2:177).
Our appeal to support the orphan sponsorship in Kashmir, helped us establish an on-going program that provides food, healthcare, education and a family environment for these underprivileged Kashmiri children

Education Program
Currently, we are funding schools in most of the refugee camps that provide education to refugee students. More number of students are enrolling every year. The schools are located in Manakpayan, Karka, Heer Koraly, Ambore, Barar Kot, Rara and Hatian Bala.

Skills Training Program
Helping Hand funds the operation of Women Training Schools for refugee camps. Here, students are trained in sewing and embroidery so that they can earn their livelihood. At the end of the course, every student receives a sewing machine
